Wrestling With God - And For God

"Let me go, for the day breaks ... I will not let you go unless you bless me!" (Genesis 32:26). George Philip describes this "incident" as "a parable of the whole of Jacob's life" - "On the one hand he wanted to hold on to God and yet he struggled against God."
We see ourselves in this. There is, within us, a constant turmoil of confused and confusing emotions. The Lord is drawing us to Himself. We draw back from Him. This is the battle of which Paul spoke in Romans 7:22-23 - "I delight in the law of God according to the inner man. But I see another law ... bringing me into captivity to the law of sin" - and Galatians 5:17 - "the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh." The 'wrestling with God', spoken of in Genesis 32, can also be described in terms of another kind of 'wrestling': "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood ... Therefore take up the whole armour of God ... " (Ephesians 6:12-13). Satan doessn't want us to hear God's words of encouragement - You are "no longer" what you were before you met with the Lord. You "have prevailed." You have been "blessed" by the Lord. He doesn't want us to have a spiritual testimony - " I have seen God ... " (Genesis 32:28-30). May the Lord deliver us from the sadness and shame of the "double-minded man" who is "unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8). In our 'wrestling', let us remember Jesus' 'wrestling' in the Garden of Gethsemane, and let us pray, with Him, " Father ... not as I will, but as You will" (Matthew 26:39).

More notes from George Philip:

Christ's Obedience, Our Salvation

Luke 2:21-52
Jesus ‘fulfilled all righteousness’(Matthew 3:15). His circumcision and presentation to the Lord was ‘according to the law of Moses’(21-24; Leviticus 12:1-8). Jesus’ obedience was always more than mere conformity to ‘the written code’. He was walking ‘in the Spirit’. He was filled with ‘the Spirit of the living God’(2 Corinthians 3:3,6). His obedience came ‘from the heart’ and His ‘praise’ came ‘not from men but from God’(Romans 6:17; 2:29). What joy there was for Simeon and Anna! This was ‘salvation’, ‘redemption’(30,38). As you journey through life, don’t ‘lose Jesus’(43-45). Keep close to Him! If you do ‘lose Him’, where will you find Him again? - ‘In the temple’(46). Have you lost your way? Find your way back to ‘the sanctuary of God’- and things will start to fall into place again (Psalm 73:16-17)!

Jesus Christ: God's Way To Victory Over Temptation

Genesis 39:1-23
In chapter 38, we read of unbridled lust. Here, we read of dah restraint: ‘how can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?’(9). Sin brings complications, and so does obedience! There is, in fact, only one complication - sin. We live in a sinful world, which has no real interest in obedience to God. We must be realistic: ‘all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted’(2 Timothy 3:12). Obedience and persecution - we see both in the story of Joseph. He was tempted, but he did not sin (7-9). Temptation is not sin. God provides ‘the way of escape’(1 Corinthians 10:13). Christ is ‘the way’(John 14:6), God’s way of escape. We go to Him when we are tempted (Hebrews 2:16; 4:15-16). Joseph was put into prison, ‘but the Lord was with him, and showed him steadfast love’(20-21) - ‘persecuted, but not forsaken’' (2 Corinthians 4:9).
